Chesapeake police responded to a traffic accident involving a pedestrian Tuesday morning at 3:49 a.m.
Police say a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on George Washington Highway near Townhouse Lane in the Deep Creek section of the city. When officers arrived, they found a black male unconscious lying in the roadway.
Police say a Ford F-150 was traveling southbound on George Washington Highway near Townhouse Lane when the driver saw a pedestrian lying in the roadway. The driver attempted to avoid the pedestrian in the roadway, but was unsuccessful.
The driver of the F-150 remained on scene and called 911. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Accident investigators are currently on scene at this time.
George Washington Highway is closed in both directions from Townhouse Lane to South Military Highway. Drivers are asked to please avoid this area until the roadway is reopened.
Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors contributing to the accident.
